The United States has Embassies and Consulates in almost any country around the world. There is only one Embassy in a country, but there can be several Consulates. The U.S. Embassy is normally located in the capital of the foreign country, while the location of Consulates depend on several other factors. If there is a large population of U.S. citizens in a particular area, a U.S. Consulate may be within close distance. A consulate is subordinate to the Embassy, and in countries with no U.S. consulates the Embassy will perform the same tasks as a Consulate.
An Embassy or Consulate provides services for U.S. citizens, Green Card holders,
visa holders and tourists. Examples of U.S. citizenship services performed may be:
- Passport services
- Citizenship services
- Tax services
For non-citizens a U.S. Embassy or Consulate may be able to assist with:
- Immigrant visa applications (Green Card through Relatives, etc.)
- Non-immigrant visa applications (B-1 Business Visa, B-2 Tourist Visa, etc.)
Note that most U.S. Embassies require an appointment to be made in advance before you will be allowed to even enter the building. There may be a delay of several weeks, so it is recommend to book your appointment early.
